Royal Crown Castle Restaurant & Bar: Dining at the Castle in New West

If you’ve been around the New Westminster area for a while, you’ll know that many restaurants have taken over the spot that used to be the BC Penitentiary Guard House that closed down in 1980. The latest entry is the Royal Crown Castle Restaurant & Bar.

This area has seen better days in the past. Sure, the staircase is still rundown… but it’s been that way for a long time. When you first walk inside, you have to go past a few doors before you find your way inside. It’s been renovated a bit since I was last here (think it was the Dublin Castle back then) but the layout is pretty much the same.

I wound up ordering the Shepherd’s Pie ($18) with seasoned ground beef, peas, and corn topped with mashed potatoes and smothered in a thick house-made Guinness gravy. It’s not a bad dish – it’s very filling and there’s lots of gravy.

Their menu is a bit of a hodge-podge of different things (stuffed yorkies, quesadillas, burgers, and some asian-inspired dishes). While this might appeal to a wider-range of diners, I wish the menu was a bit more focused.
